For years, incandescent light bulbs were the standard. These days, they’ve mostly been replaced by CFLs and LEDs in the name of energy efficiency. And while these new bulbs can reduce energy bills and last longer, the old-fashioned incandescent bulbs may actually be better for your health. But because of regulations, they’re harder to find.
Why are Incandescent Bulbs Healthier?
Incandescent bulbs produce a smooth, natural spectrum of light that doesn’t flicker the way many LEDs do. LED lights flicker at speeds faster than what the human brain can detect. But this flickering light has been linked to headaches, fatigue, and even neurological symptoms in sensitive people (study). Incandescents also emit very little blue light, unlike LEDs which can disrupt your circadian rhythm and melatonin production (study).
CFLs contain mercury and LEDs sometimes include rare metals, but incandescent bulbs are simple: glass, tungsten, and metal. That makes them easier to handle and safer to dispose of. And because they emit a continuous spectrum of light, incandescents look and feel more like sunlight. This natural glow can improve comfort and reduce eye strain compared to the “spiky” spectrum of LEDs (study).
