Let’s talk truth: there is no such thing as 100% toxin-free wall paint. We’ve done our best to give you the best options that we can find so you can make informed choices.

Even the best “low-VOC” or “natural” paints still contain chemical ingredients—because they have to. Paint isn’t just color—it’s a mixture of binders, pigments, solvents, and additives that help it stick to walls, resist mold, and dry evenly. And that means chemicals are involved.

You’ve probably seen paints labeled:

  • “Low-VOC”
  • “Zero-VOC”
  • “No harmful fumes”
  • Or even “Non-toxic”

But here’s the catch:

  • “Low-VOC” only refers to the base paint, not the pigments mixed in at the store—which can add VOCs right back in.
  • “Zero-VOC” doesn’t mean zero emissions. Many paints still off-gas for months after application, especially in enclosed spaces.
  • And “non-toxic” isn’t a regulated term. It’s marketing, not a safety guarantee.

Even natural or clay-based paints can contain biocides, mildewcides, ammonia derivatives, or synthetic resins to keep mold away and increase shelf life.

Let’s also not forget the microplastics that come from many acrylic-based paints, especially when they degrade over time. Yes, even those “eco” paints might be contributing to plastic pollution in your home and the environment.

  • Ventilate heavily for weeks (not just during painting)
